Where to stay during your Acadia National Park Elopement
The best place to stay during your Acadia Elopement

Figuring out where to stay for an Acadia National Park elopement can shape your whole experience. Your lodging affects how early your morning feels, how easy dinner plans are, and how calm the day feels before portraits start. Around Mount Desert Island, couples can choose from classic waterfront hotels, cottage-style stays, quieter harbor towns, and even glamping options.

For this guide, I’d keep your search centered on Mount Desert Island and the areas that make sense for an actual Acadia elopement weekend. That usually means Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor, Southwest Harbor, Bass Harbor, and West Tremont. The goal is not just finding a pretty room. The goal is choosing a stay that supports your timeline, your energy, and the kind of experience you want.

Why your lodging choice matters for an Acadia elopement

Some couples want to walk to coffee, dinner, and the waterfront. For them, Bar Harbor usually makes the most sense. Other couples want a slower, quieter home base with fewer crowds. In that case, the quiet side of Mount Desert Island is usually the better fit.

Your lodging also affects your photos. A hotel may be practical but still feel dark, cramped, or visually busy. On the other hand, a stay with clean light, outdoor space, and a calm room layout can make getting ready feel much more relaxed. That matters more than people think.

Where to stay for an Acadia National Park elopement in Bar Harbor

Bar Harbor Inn for classic waterfront charm

If you want the most classic Bar Harbor experience, Bar Harbor Inn is a strong pick. It sits on the waterfront in downtown Bar Harbor and spreads its accommodations across three guest buildings. It has the kind of coastal New England feel that works beautifully for a destination elopement weekend.

This is a great fit for couples who want easy dinner plans, simple walking access to town, and a stay that already feels special. It also makes the logistics easier for couples who are bringing a few guests.

Salt Cottages for easier access with a little breathing room

Salt Cottages is a great middle-ground option. It is minutes from downtown Bar Harbor and minutes from the Hulls Cove entrance to Acadia. The property offers both cottages and bungalow-style hotel rooms, which makes it feel more flexible than a standard hotel.

I especially like this option for couples who want easy access to town without sleeping right in the middle of it. It also works well when you want separate spaces for family members or a more relaxed setup the night before the elopement.

Harborside for couples who want in-town convenience

Harborside Hotel, Spa & Marina is another practical Bar Harbor choice. It is on Frenchman Bay in downtown Bar Harbor and has a large number of accommodations, plus resort-style amenities. It also offers deluxe rooms, studios, and multi-bedroom suites.

That mix makes Harborside especially useful for couples bringing parents, siblings, or a small guest group. Everyone can stay close, but you do not have to crowd everyone into one house rental.

Quiet-side stays for an Acadia National Park elopement

The Claremont for a slower and more elevated feel

If you know you want a quieter stay, start with The Claremont in Southwest Harbor. The hotel describes itself as being on Mount Desert Island’s serene west side, and that is a big part of its appeal. It feels tucked away, but still polished and intentional.

This is one of the best options for couples who want their lodging to feel like part of the trip, not just a place to sleep. It works especially well for multi-day elopement weekends or for couples who want a more peaceful morning before portraits.

Asticou for Northeast Harbor charm

The Asticou Hotel is another beautiful option on Mount Desert Island. It sits above Northeast Harbor, near Acadia’s southern side, and blends restored historic character with a more refined coastal feel. The property includes rooms, suites, and stand-alone cottages.

For couples who want something elegant but not overly formal, Asticou makes a lot of sense. It also gives you a quieter setting than central Bar Harbor, while still keeping you close to the park.

Why the quiet side works so well

The quiet side is ideal for couples who want less traffic, less noise, and a slower pace. That part of Mount Desert Island often feels more tucked away. It can be a really good fit for introverts, couples with guests who want downtime, or anyone building a more private elopement weekend.

Best luxury stays for an Acadia National Park elopement

When couples ask me about the more elevated options, I usually think of Bar Harbor InnThe ClaremontThe Asticou, and Harborside first. Each one gives you a more polished stay, but the vibe is different at each property.

Bar Harbor Inn is best for iconic waterfront Bar Harbor energy. Harborside is great for couples who want a bigger resort feel and more room types. The Claremont is a strong pick for a luxury stay on the quiet side. The Asticou is lovely for couples who want historic charm and harbor views without being in the middle of downtown.

Best places to stay for getting ready photos

When I think about getting ready photos, I look for three things: good light, enough room to move, and a setting that already feels calm. A beautiful exterior helps too, especially when we want a few quiet portraits before heading into the park.

For that reason, I would strongly consider Bar Harbor InnThe Claremont, and The Asticou first. All three have a more intentional visual feel. They also offer the kind of architecture, grounds, or harbor setting that can help the day feel more elevated on camera.

Salt Cottages is also worth a look if you want a more casual, updated feel. The cottage layout can be easier than a traditional hotel room, especially when you want space to spread out details, outfits, and flowers.

Best stays for couples bringing guests

Guest-friendly lodging usually comes down to space. You want room types that make sense for different people, not just one nice room for the couple.

That is why Harborside stands out. It offers standard rooms, studios, and larger suite options. That setup can make guest lodging much easier, especially when parents or siblings are coming in for the weekend.

Salt Cottages is another great option for small groups. The mix of cottages and bungalow rooms gives people a little independence. That can be helpful when you want togetherness without feeling packed in.

The Asticou also deserves a look here because it includes cottages in addition to its main hotel rooms. That extra flexibility can be a big win for couples who want a refined stay but still need a practical layout for family.

Yurts, glamping, and unique stays near Acadia

Acadia Yurts for a fun and memorable stay

If you want something more unique, Acadia Yurts in Southwest Harbor is one of the most interesting options on Mount Desert Island. The property offers luxury yurts and tiny houses, and it also has an on-site wellness center. Some of the rental options sleep more than two guests, which makes it even more flexible.

This is a strong fit for couples who want their lodging to feel like part of the adventure. It is also great for couples who want a slower, cozy, more private atmosphere.

Acadia Wilderness Lodge for quiet-side glamping

Acadia Wilderness Lodge in West Tremont is another fun option. It describes itself as a family-friendly glamping village on Mount Desert Island. It leans more outdoorsy than a traditional hotel, but it still brings comfort and thoughtful amenities into the experience.

This kind of stay can work really well for couples who want something relaxed, nature-forward, and a little different from the usual Bar Harbor hotel route.

My honest take on where to stay for an Acadia National Park elopement

If you want the easiest logistics, stay in Bar Harbor or just outside it. That works best for early dinners, easy coffee runs, and simple navigation. If you want a more peaceful weekend, stay on the quiet side in Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor, or West Tremont.

  • If good ‘getting ready’ photos matter a lot, choose a stay with light, space, and a setting that already feels intentional.
  • If guests are part of the plan, prioritize cottages, suites, or flexible room layouts. That one decision can make the whole weekend feel easier.

Because so much of Mount Desert Island lodging is made up of inns, cottages, and specialty stays, I usually recommend booking early once your date is locked in. That is especially true for summer and fall. It is a planning-based recommendation, but it follows the kind of lodging mix promoted across Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island.

One last note: I left Grand Harbor Inn out of this guide on purpose. It is in Camden, not on Mount Desert Island, so it does not make as much sense for most Acadia elopement weekends.

At the end of the day, the best answer to where to stay for an Acadia National Park elopement is the stay that supports your pace.

  • Some couples want the energy of Bar Harbor.
  • Some want the quiet side.
  • Some want a hotel that feels classic, and some want to sleep in a yurt and make the whole trip feel adventurous from the start.
