Sunrise Elopement Photos at Monument Cove + Newport Cove in Acadia National Park

If you’re dreaming of a sunrise vow exchange or a quiet first look with the ocean doing its thing in the background, Monument Cove + Newport Cove are two of my favorite places to begin an Acadia elopement day.

This area is the sweet spot of cinematic coastline + easy logistics — which is exactly what you want when it’s dark, early, and you’re running on adrenaline and love.

Why this area is perfect for sunrise vows, vow exchanges, and first looks

1) It’s easy to access at sunrise (aka no chaos in the dark)

We can meet at the Thunder Hole parking lot, park quickly, and start moving without a long hike in the dark. Bonus: restrooms are right there, which is a huge win for getting-ready touchups and comfort before we head out.

2) The sunrise light here is unreal

You get soft early light, big ocean horizon lines, and those dramatic granite ledges that make everything feel grounded and epic at the same time. It’s romantic without trying too hard.

3) It’s flexible — we can pivot fast

The coastline here gives us multiple “looks” in a small radius: wide scenic views, intimate tucked-in rock pockets, and open ledges that feel like your own little world.

4) It sets us up perfectly for the rest of your elopement day

Starting here is strategic: once we’re done, we can keep rolling down Park Loop Road to hit other spots for portraits, adventure time, or a second set of vows without wasting your coverage commuting.

The practical reasons I love starting elopements here

  • Thunder Hole parking + bathrooms make the start of the day simple and comfortable.
  • Quick movement options along the coast if we want more variety fast.
  • Sunrise = fewer people, more quiet, more space to actually feel your feelings.
  • It’s one of the best places for a “slow start” that still looks absolutely insane in photos.

A quick safety note (because Acadia rocks don’t play)

This section of coast is gorgeous — and it can be slick. Rocks + seaweed + salty mist = slippery conditions, especially at sunrise. I always recommend sturdy shoes for walking between spots, and we’ll be mindful of waves + footing the whole time.
