Dreaming of a stunning, cinematic backdrop for your elopement that feels like it’s out of a movie? Then Berkshires is really it! Located in Western Massachusetts, about two to three hours from Boston & NYC, this region is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, charming small towns, and a vibe that’s equal parts cozy and epic.
Here, you can exchange your vows under a canopy of towering trees or while soaking in the stunning mountain views that stretch for miles and miles. But this is quite a big area, so here are some ideas on exactly where to elope in the Berkshires!
Mount Greylock, the highest peak in Massachusetts, offers sweeping views over the Berkshires and beyond. The summit is famous for its 92-foot-tall Veterans War Memorial Tower and breathtaking vistas of mountains and valleys. The views alone make it an epic backdrop, especially at sunrise or sunset!
If you want the views without a strenuous hike, you can drive up the Mount Greylock Scenic Byway from May to October. However, if you want to hike, you can, but the trails are moderate to difficult. For a quieter, intimate experience, consider eloping at one of the overlooks along the trail rather than the summit itself.
Monument Mountain offers forested trails that lead up to a rocky summit with expansive 360-degree views of the Berkshires. The hike up to Squaw Peak rewards you with a stunning vantage point over the Housatonic River and the Berkshires’ iconic rolling hills.
The hike isn’t too challenging, but it depends on what is challenging for you. It takes about an hour and has a steep but manageable incline.
Bash Bish Falls is home to Massachusetts’ tallest waterfall, which cascades down a stunning rock formation. Surrounded by lush greenery, the falls are especially enchanting during the spring melt or when surrounded by fall colors.
The hike here is moderate to easy. There’s a short trail from the New York side that’s about 0.5 miles. The Massachusetts side trail is steeper but offers a beautiful walk.
With 24 acres of stunning gardens, the Berkshire Botanical Garden has a mix of open lawns, wooded trails, and colorful flowerbeds. The gardens change with the seasons, offering something unique for every time of year. The gardens are well-manicured and thoughtfully designed, and they are absolutely gorgeous for you to roam around hand in hand!
I recommend contacting the garden to check on availability and guidelines for intimate ceremonies.
Part of Beartown State Forest, Beartown Mountain is surrounded by dense forest and quiet trails. The summit area isn’t particularly high, but the forest itself is enchanting, with streams and small ponds scattered throughout. It’s beautiful year-round, with autumn offering especially stunning foliage.
Plus, most trails here are relatively flat, and the state forest has several accessible entry points and parking areas.
Mount Everett is the second-highest peak in the Berkshires, with views that are just as breathtaking. The summit is surrounded by ancient, stunted pitch pines and open rock ledges, giving it a rugged, windswept appearance. It’s quieter than Mount Greylock and offers a similar sense of adventure with fewer visitors.
The trails here are moderate to difficult, though, so it’s a great option if you’d like more of an adventure for your elopement day.
This 4,000-acre state forest offers rugged mountain terrain, dense forests, and panoramic views of the Taconic Mountain Range. It is also home to some locations I’ve mentioned before, like Mount Everett and Bash Bish Falls.
Here, you’ll be able to find a variety of trails for all levels, depending on the location you’re trying to reach. The forest does have easier access points and shorter trails for couples wanting beautiful views without a strenuous climb.
Stockbridge Bowl is one of the largest and most scenic lakes in the Berkshires. It’s surrounded by lush forests and hills. It’s a great option if you love water views and want a tranquil setting for your elopement and it’s also easy to access!
This reservoir is surrounded by small hills and marshy areas that give it a unique, almost rustic charm. The area is especially beautiful in the fall, with vibrant autumn colors reflecting on the water. It’s a bit off the beaten path, making it ideal for couples who want to escape the crowds.
It’s also rather easy to access, with some areas accessible by car, while others may require a short walk.
To elope in Berkshires, you’ll need to grab a Massachusetts marriage license. You can apply for your marriage license at any City or Town Clerk’s office in Massachusetts. It doesn’t have to be the one where you’re getting married. Both of you need to be present to apply, and there’s a three-day waiting period before you can use it, so plan ahead.
Once issued, the license is valid for 60 days, so you’ve got a little wiggle room. Depending on the town, the marriage license cost ranges between $35 to $50.
Also, the Massachusetts statute does not require witnesses to be present at your ceremony, so it is the perfect state for eloping without any guests. If that’s what you’d like, of course!
Depending on your elopement location, you may need to get an elopement permit. Many public areas, such as state parks and forests, may require a special use permit for ceremonies, especially if you’re bringing in vendors or setting up equipment. While locations like inns, estates, or gardens typically handle permits internally.
Check with local authorities, such as the park administration or local town office, to inquire about any necessary permits and associated fees. As your elopement photographer, I’d be happy to help you find out whether your elopement needs a permit and where to get one!
I hope that this blog helped you and your partner find the perfect spot to elope in the Berkshires. If you’re looking for someone to help you create your dream day and document it while we’re at it, I’d LOVE to help!
